“Create space simply to "be" and clarity emerges for you to see” - Gabriella Goddard
While you can't replicate the full ambiance and experience of a professional massage, especially without me there, there are several key items you can incorporate into your space to make it a tranquil haven for relaxation. Each item on my list is carefully chosen to contribute to an environment that invites you to pause, relax, and regenerate. And if you know me you know… I do a stupid amount of research when making purchases, especially for my massage space because I use everything almost daily. I also like a good deal, so most items hit that sweet spot of quality and investment.
With that said, here are 10 items I think you can use in your home to create a calming space! 👊
A weighted blanket offers a comforting, gentle pressure that mimics a hug, promoting relaxation and a deeper sense of security. It's perfect for winding down after a long day or for incorporating into relaxation practices at home. From experience I wouldn’t recommend one larger than a twin size, the throw size is perfect. The recommended weight is 10% of your body weight. For reference, I use a 20 lb blanket on my table. This one is has similar qualities to the one I purchased, but isn’t available any longer.
2. Diffuser
A diffuser is essential for setting the mood. Pair it with your choice of essential oils to create a serene atmosphere filled with calming or uplifting aromas, depending on your needs. I love this one.
I love, LOVE, LOVE Edens Garden for their essential oil blends. Aromatherapy adds another layer of relaxation for clients. and takes the guesswork out of creating the perfect balance of oils for the desired effect. Plus you can skip plain lavender and eucalyptus, unless you love them, for something a little more elevated for you to create the perfect calming space.
Here are a few of the blends I use and clients rave about:
And if you like blends from one of those other companies, they have recreated some of them as well. I also love that they have kid-safe blends in their “OK for Kids” line and sets you can purchase. Edens Garden is the perfect combination of quality and affordability and they are not a MLM company.
The soft, natural glow from a salt lamp creates a warm and inviting space. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it's believed to have air-purifying properties, contributing to a cleaner and more serene environment. This one is similar in size to what I have in my treatment space.
This versatile flax pillow can be warmed or cooled and placed on tension-prone areas like the neck or shoulders to relieve stress and discomfort. It’s a wonderful, natural way to bring the therapeutic touch into your home. I have some without covers available at my office for $20 or you can purchase ones with covers here.
Soft, breathable cotton sheets are a must for creating a comfortable and relaxing bed or massage space. They enhance your relaxation experience, ensuring you stay comfortable and cool throughout your rest. These are the sheet brands I am currently using at Relax Wichita:
Walmart - Better Homes and Garden 300tc 100% Cotton Sheet Set
Sam’s Club - Members Mark 450tc Cotton Sheet Set
Target - Pillowfort Cotton Sheet Set
A white noise machine can mask distracting sounds and create a calming soundscape that's conducive to relaxation and meditation, helping you focus inward and find peace. The sound machine I have doesn’t appear to be available any longer but Amazon recommends this one and it looks like a solid replacement.
For those who find music or guided meditations a key part of their relaxation routine, a good Bluetooth speaker is indispensable. It allows you to personalize your space with sounds that soothe your soul. I have this one and it’s been great for my space!
Clean air is essential for a healthy relaxation space. An air purifier helps remove allergens, dust, and other pollutants, ensuring your sanctuary supports your overall well-being. I have been very pleased with this BlueAir air purifier.
While you probably don't have a massage table in your home for relaxation and regeneration, you can add a heated mattress pad to enhance your sleep. Adding a mattress warmer to your bedding may help you relax, fall asleep faster, and get more rest - a key aspect of regeneration. This one by Beautyrest seems like a solid choice.
While not everyone can have the full massage therapy experience at home, integrating these elements can significantly enhance your ability to pause and regenerate, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Remember, taking time for yourself isn't a luxury; it's an essential part of self-care.
I have a sherpa layer on the massage table. Wool is temperature regulating, moisture-wicking, and just adds a cozy layer so you can relax. The product I use wouldn't work for you, but look at this luxurious mattress pad. I want to add one to my bed!
I've had a subscription to The Calm App for at least 7 years. There are sleep stories, meditations, music, 🎶 affirmations, and there's even a kid's section. I can share 5 guest passes per month. With this link you can try it free for 30 days if you are one of the first 5 in the month.
When the kid was a baby, I cherished her muslin swaddling blankets and was so jealous they weren't in adult sizes. Well, after some research, I found Muslin Comfort. This is the last blanket I will ever own. The sizes are OVERSIZED - the king size is literally 10 feet by 10 feet, so there's no more fighting for covers. The quality is unbeatable. The material keeps you at the perfect temperature even if you're a hot sleeper. Some day, these will be the blankets I have in the massage room! If you decide to splurge, you can save 22% with my link! Oooh, and this blanket just keeps getting softer and softer with every wash!
Each item on this list is chosen for its ability to transform any space into a sanctuary of peace and relaxation. While not everyone can have the full massage therapy experience at home, integrating these elements can significantly enhance your ability to pause and regenerate, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Remember, taking time for yourself isn't a luxury; it's an essential part of self-care.
